Welcome to the Friday Freebie and if you’re new to www.footballwriting.co.uk, this is the free post coming at you every Friday as a taster of what you can find behind the paywall.
Do not know why I should suddenly remember this and it is a bit vague as a memory. A guy called Len Shackleton who used to play for Sunderland back in the late 50s early 60s, he also had quite a brain and was not afraid to voice his views. He wrote a book relating his views on football as he saw it at the time and dedicated one chapter to the FA, THE CHAPTER WAS BLANK. Point being the FA have based on these memories been a problem for a long time. Final memory Len received a fine for his trouble
That doesn't surprise me David at all, I've long been shouting that the full FA do nothing for the game, however I will point out there are a few at County FA's who do some sterling work throughout the country.
Premier League formed was the beginning of the end. Past 15 years top flight football has no longer been the sport we all grew up watching and loving.
It made me lose the love of the game at the top level.
Footballers these days are spoilt and believe their own "FIFA" game card. I can't imagine any of these playing on the old dug up pitches, playing in cup tie pitches.
91 I remember Baggies beating Charlton 1-0. Tony Ford. His shot was going wide, hit a puddle in the 7 yard box and went in! That was a proper 3rd round cup pitch! Epitomised what football and the Fa was all about.
Wrexham, Woking (SIGH), Sutton to name a few all big giant killers. Each showed why fans love the Cup so much!
I genuinely believe the quality of the game has declined. International teams are as bad as I've seen them. Worst Italy, German teams I've known. Brazil are nowhere near the level and Argentina winning the world cup summed it up.
Back to the FA Cup, clubs complain about too many games. They don't complain when they have to play 6 European matches just to get to the next round. Which is ludicrous
Sadly, the Premier League has become a breeding ground for power! FA Cup is a competition they play in midweek these days.
Absolutely agree Kevin and when you add in VAR as well. It's bizarre as well we have a professional league yet our officials still have to take extra payment abroad too. It's sadly the way the game is going but it needs to change for the good of the whole game and not just 20 clubs.
A competition which involves all clubs but 20 have a say in how it is run is wrong. As far as I am concerned the top 20 who do not take it seriously can take a hike and leave the FA Cup to the clubs to whom it still means something. You only have to listen to DB and the respect he gives it, some thought he would put out a shall we say different 11 in the last round but no he gave the cup the respect it deserves, so the ones who see it differently can go. Once the Bees exit for this reason my interest this year will cease. If the top clubs have limited interest so have I.
Very true David, once all the non-league clubs are out my interest ends! I'm pleased most got decent draws in the 1st Round Proper, it's a shame that in 2 or 3 rounds time the competition diminishes into one where the seriousness isn't the same, it has to change for the good of football.

Premier League are everything wrong in the game.

Definitely Trev, it's all about money and at what stage will Premier League games be played abroad!!
It'll be 6-7 clubs who dominate and make decisons. Part of me wished they'd left to the Super League and leave the proper football clubs to the fans.
Football is on a spiral sadly.
I don't think that Super League has gone away yet, it will happen, maybe then that might be the reset football needs in this country.
Maybe that will reset footy as you say. Let them go!

I wish the Premier league sides had to play from round 1!!
