Presumably they were hoping Gateshead wouldn’t make the top 7 to avoid having to make a decision. To be fair their decision making is generally awful so that’s probably why.
PL did the same on the Tevez third party transfer saga years ago. Didn’t deduct points hoping West Ham would go down anyway . Instead Tevez helped them to a great escape and left Sheffield United fuming
