It says a lot that when I praised a Ref publicly it meant so much to them!

Indeed, shows how little praise is handed out for a good game, just the mistakes that are remembered.

The focus on referees, about decisions they make, is setting a bad tone. TV pundits have some responsibility in creating negativity.

Players, managers and others on the bench who shout abuse or worse should face sanctions.

Clubs must take responsibility and stress that players do not make abusive comments, threats or physical attacks. Criminal proceedings should take place and in that I include player to player assaults.

Referees should be respected as we have been used to in Rugby. Anything less, fines through to bans and prison should be options. When they are in place and actioned, they won’t be used very often.

Football is promoting anti-racism, diversity and mental health and yet tolerates referee abuse. Hypocrisy!

Absolutely right Roland! The report tells you it's affecting the mental health of referee's but do nothing to help almost turning a blind eye. The Bodycam trial beginning this week is long overdue.

It starts with FIFA & UEFA almost as corrupt as the present Government. Sorry to get political.

Worrying problem which I feel goes far deeper than football, it is a society issue as standards in public life in general fall so it effects all areas including out favorite game. So much as I regret saying it until we return to being in a position of holding people who should be able to be respected and who earn it in the first place the situation will persist. It all boils down to respect for authority at all levels of society and at present lack of respect for football officials is just a by product of the whole problem. Having said all this perhaps we could learn some lessons from Rugby at least at the top end of the game.

I think you're right there David re society, but also lessons can be learnt from other sports too, I think football is too proud and stubborn sometimes to accept it's not perfect.
