The true cost of Football League relegation

Glanford Park, the home of Scunthorpe Utd FC

This week we’ve seen the harsh reality of what relegation from the Football League means and what happens when performances don’t improve both on and off the pitch.

Clubs generally end up in the relegation zone of League Two because of one or both of the reasons listed in that opening paragraph and it can be a freefall through the divisions like a juggernaut and no brakes strong enough to apply.

In the past few years alone we’ve seen Chesterfield and Southend alone follow that exact pattern and it took strong intervention to stop both heading into the National League North and South divisions.
